If Someone Tells you…
DO…
Assure them they did the right thing talking to someone.
Tell them how brave they are for getting help.
Encourage them to seek medical/professional attention.
Talk with them about STD’s and pregnancy issues.
Allow them to tell you what they are comfortable with.
Allow them to use the language they know.
Give POWER BACK to victims by allowing them to make decisions.
Tell them that rape is not the punishment for underage drinking or for
sneaking out of their parents’ house.
Don’t…
Promise the rapist will be caught.
Force them to go to law enforcement.
Promise them you will not tell anyone.
Force them to change their lifestyle in any way.
React to the words they use to describe the attach.
Assume they know the physical effects of rape.
Assume they can tell their family. There may be violence at home.
