Reduce Vulnerability
The following safety plan information for sexual violence victims is from the NKDSVS and was collected from a variety of federal and state sources.
Reduce your Vulnerability
At Home
- Don’t place keys under mats, in mailboxes, or other “hidden places” outside the door.
- Before moving into a new place, change the locks.
- Don’t advertise your absence. Stop mail and paper deliveries and don’t leave notes saying that you are done.
- Require ID’s from anyone claiming to represent an agency.
- Call your police department for a FREE home security survey. A professional can make suggestions to enhance safety.
Out and About
- Avoid walking alone; there is safety in numbers.
- If you think someone is following you, don’t go home; go to a store, fire station, gas station, etc.
- Have your keys ready so your car or home can be entered easily.
- Don’t feel obligated to be friendly or helpful if you are alone.
- Rapists use many tactics to isolate or corner you.
- If you are confronted with a gun, RUN, your chances of survival are much greater.
In the Car
- Keep windows high enough so no one can reach into your car.
- If your safety is threatened, hold down the horn and drive away.
- NEVER pick up hitchhikers.
- Should your car become disabled, raise the hood and sit inside with the doors locked. Leave the windows high when talking to anyone who may approach you.
